The Grand National is always an eagerly anticipated event in the horse racing calendar, and this year is no exception. One horse that has been making waves is Hewick, trained by John ‘Shark’ Hanlon. With an impressive track record and a weighty task ahead, Hewick is aiming to join the legendary Red Rum in the annals of Aintree history.
A Rising Star
Hewick has been turning heads with his outstanding performances in recent years. Despite being a bargain purchase at just £800, this horse has proven his worth time and time again. Under the guidance of trainer John ‘Shark’ Hanlon, Hewick has achieved remarkable success, accumulating over £600,000 in prize money.
Victories on Multiple Fronts
Hewick’s journey to the Grand National has been filled with triumphs. He has secured wins at prestigious races such as the Galway Plate, Oaksey Chase, and even the American Grand National. However, it was his extraordinary last-to-first victory in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day that truly set him apart. Hewick soared past formidable contenders like Bravemansgame and Allaho, cementing his position as a force to be reckoned with.
Top-Weight Ambitions
With his exceptional performances, Hewick has been assigned a top weight for this year’s Grand National. His official rating of 169 makes him the favorite to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Red Rum, who last achieved this feat in 1974. Trainer John ‘Shark’ Hanlon had anticipated the weight allocation and believes that Hewick is deserving of this recognition.
“I knew he’d have top weight,” Hanlon stated. “You have to expect that. He probably deserves top weight. I think the trip will suit him.”
The Road Ahead
Before taking on the Grand National, Hewick has his sights set on the Gold Cup. If all goes well in that race, he will head to Aintree to tackle the National. Hanlon recognizes the significance of these events and is thrilled to have a runner in such prestigious races.
“It’s a mighty day. It’s one of those days you look forward to all year. The National, the Gold Cup, and the King George at Kempton—they’re the three big days in England. So, it’s great to have a runner there,” Hanlon expressed.
A Diamond in the Rough
Hewick’s story is one of resilience and finding brilliance in unexpected places. Discovered in a local sale for a mere €850 (around £800), this horse has defied all expectations. Hanlon always believed in Hewick’s potential as a National horse, and this year presents a significant opportunity with a month between the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National.
“The most important thing is that he gets good ground. With fewer runners in the race this year, there won’t be quite as much weight between us and the horses at the bottom. In previous years, the difference could be a fair bit more, and we’d be giving more away,” Hanlon explained.
Competition and Challenges
While Hewick stands tall as the top weight contender, he will face tough competition from previous Grand National winner Corach Rambler, who has been assigned a rating of 159. Additionally, Gavin Cromwell’s Vanillier, the current favorite for the race, boasts an attractive mark of 151. Welsh Grand National winner Nassalam, representing the Gary Moore team, has been given a rating of 161.
The Excitement Builds
As the Grand National draws near, anticipation and excitement continue to mount. Spectators and enthusiasts eagerly await the clash of these exceptional horses in one of the most prestigious races in the world. Will Hewick emulate the great Red Rum and etch his name into Aintree history? Only time will tell.
